some drawbacks, but great for the money

    Review Date: May 31, 2009
    Reviewer: Paul McIntyre, Jacksonville, FL
I ordered my 1000HA with chiclet keyboard about a week and a half ago, and I couldn't be happier so far. Though I was surprised to see just how small 10 inches actually is (I can't even imagine having a 7-inch screen!), the screen size is comfortable for me and I'm able to cut down on my scrolling using the zoom-out feature on the touchpad--though I can see this being a problem if you're farsighted. I also haven't noticed the keyboard as being "flimsy," as some other reviewers mentioned, and even with the smaller keyboard I'm still able to type with what seems like the same accuracy. I tested out the built-in microphone and webcam with two friends in other countries, and both said they were able to see and hear me better than with my previous USB model. The speakers are average but crisp--I wouldn't recommend trying to use this thing to fill a room with sound, but if it's just you sitting with it on your lap you should be fine.

As for the drawbacks, they're pretty limited but still worth mentioning. The click buttons, like previous reviewers have noted, are a little difficult to use at times. When you approach them from the front they move easily, but I still find myself trying to click from the top (like my last computer) and I have to stop and think about what I'm doing wrong. Additionally, programs seem a little slower to load if you're used to a high-powered desktop replacement, and don't even bother trying HQ video because it will be too choppy--though "regular" video is fine, and I can run Hulu, network program sites, Youtube, and my Slingbox on this model. Again, keep in mind that these things will probably slow down if you try to run something else that's heavy-duty in the middle, though.

In conclusion, I love my new eeePC. I did a lot of research before buying this model, and I'm happy that I found this sleek little netbook to replace my dying (and huge) laptop. I plan to upgrade the RAM to 2GB soon, but it has been running well even without it so far. At this price, how can you go wrong!
The perfect fit for my job.

I purchased the Asus Eee 1000HA last month for the sole purpose of downloading files from my camera when I'm in the field. Many times the client wants to see the subject matter on a larger scale as opposed to looking at the back of the camera. The Asus is a perfect fit for my job. It's small and light weight. I was never a big fan of the Windows operating system. I was always a Mac user since the technology went from film to digital. My first preference was a macbook but the price tag was too high as compared to the new line of Asus netbooks on the market. Battery life, for the Asus, is about 5 hours on a full charge when the internet is not in use and depending how many programs you have running. The built in Wi Fi is a great feature when on the road and hooking up to local area hotspots,. The size takes a little getting used to as did the switch from Mac to PC. It was well worth the price. To this day I have not had one problem with the computer. It does everything as advertised. The operating manual states the battery life will give you a 7 hour charge but I find it closer to 4-5 hours. It's still a great machine. The 160 GB hard drive allows me to download hundreds of large size files.
Do yourself a favor when shopping for a netbook, give the Asus series of Netbooks a good looking over.
I don't know why people compare this to $1000 laptops

Portable, plenty of storage for netbook, good battery life.

I'm not sure why people insist on comparing the $300 netbook to a $1000 mac. This is less than 1/3 of the price. No pun intended, but let's compare apples to apples.

This is fine for web surfing, emails, and ms office on the go. More functional than a PDA, but less powerful compared to a laptop.

    Reviewer: Baldridge Family, -
This review is for the non computer savvy parent who is pulling their hair out right now trying to pick a laptop for their soon to be student ----
Bought this for my daughter, from another retailer, for $[...] on sale, and she LOVES IT! - A friend also has had it for a year now, and she loves her's too.
We were sold on a Netbook (instead of Laptop or Notebook) when we talked to several college students and found out that it was common to find kids sitting in the hallways between classes trying desperately to charge their laptop batteries for the next class b/c battery life sucks so bad on the average lappy (they may SAY it's 4 hrs... trust me, it's NOT).
WORSE - they also told us that many students just leave their laptops at the dorm cause it's not worth lugging them to class when the battery is just gonna crap out on them.
Netbooks are the solution that increasingly more students have found to deal with this problem. With 7 hrs. of battery time, they can sail right through back to back classes with no problem, and still have battery life to burn. PLUS! - They can do all their fun stuff on this thing too. Chat - Email - Skype - Facebook - Music - Blog - blah, blah blah. That may not be a selling point for YOU, but trust me... it is for THEM! *LOL*
Not to mention - this thing is so light and small - it doesn't add much to the back-pack load they carry around all day. That's a huge plus!

    Things to keep in mind:
<> It has no CD drive, so.. you should buy a separate external CD drive. (Might as well get a DVD Readable/Writeable - so they can BURN CD's/DVD's as well as play them. You'll need this to create system back-up CD's (in case the thing ever crashes, they can get it working again. Good thing to do on ANY computer!) -- and load programs (like Microsoft Office for instance) - plus you can pick one up for as little as $[...], so - why not?) The drive is lightweight too, so it's no problem to carry around both the netbook & the drive whenever they need to (which wouldn't be often anyway).
<> Get the model with the 6 CELL BATTERY - not the 4 cell. Longer battery life, for less than $100 more. TOTALLY worth it.
<> Go ahead and get 1GB extra memory and pop it in to make this thing a 2GB machine(or have an experienced person pop it in if that's not your thing). - It's about $[...] of "SOOOOO WORTH IT" bang for your buck!
<> The ASUS runs on Windows XP..... NOT VISTA. - Thank GOD! All of the laptops we looked at (Except for some of the ASUS lappys) forced Vista on you and many don't allow you to downgrade to XP at all -or- without a lot of problems you just don't need.
<>This netbook does NOT come with Office. Not many computers do these days. That'll run you another $[...], unless you already have a version & key at home you can use to load onto it.
<> A fairly nice netbook sleeve (soft case) comes with the machine in the box. We bought a messenger bag carrying case before we knew that. She'll still use it along with the sleeve though.
<> This particular ASUS model had a wider keyboard than the others we looked at. Our daughter is a lightening fast typer who is very used to a full-sized keyboard, but she adjusted to this one with no problems! - That surprised us both! - The smaller keyboards she tried out on other models gave her some trouble.

Even with the extras we needed to buy for the Netbook (mentioned above) - plus an extra accidental insurance plan - an 8GB flash drive - a pack of 50 clean DVD's for her to burn to her heart's delight -- and tax -- I still got out the door for $[...] with a VERY happy kid!

By the way -ASUS is a quality company. Best known for awesome motherboards in particular. Netbooks are a new gig for them, and according to my computer guru friends, they're pulling it off nicely! I see another reviewer mentioned that his keyboard seemed cheap. Ours doesn't have that problem. In fact, it's a tight 'lil keyboard. No flex in the board or excess play in the keys. I'm not sure what he's talking about.

We couldn't be happier. We saved a lot of money AND a lot of trouble!

    Review Date: July 2, 2009
    Reviewer: Mark, Bradenton/Sarasota, Florida USA
I've had the 1000HA for about a month now, and it's great! I haven't found anything I want to do that I can't do on my eeepc. I had been "between laptops" for a few years, and I've been interested in netbooks since I first heard about them. I looked at the MSI Wind U123, but was really drawn to the chicklet keyboard (because my 2 year old son has popped off other people's laptop keys before) and the price for a 6-cell 10-inch.

I haven't had any problem with using the keyboard, even after hours of typing. 10 inch screen is really the sweet spot for usability. As others note, I have noticed some keyboard flex if I really try to create a problem, but I don't notice it at all in normal use. Love the front-click buttons on the touchpad--much more comfortable than on a regular laptop.

Pros: battery life. I have used it (with the wifi off) for about 6 hours; about 4 to 5 average with the wifi on. Light and portable. I also really like white, too. At the current price, the value proposition vis-a-vis 1000HE/other netbooks is great. I don't miss the wireless-N or the extra hour or two of battery that I might otherwise get. Also, 160 GB is plenty of hard disk for me, even with multiple OSes I have plenty of room for my data. Online video plays back with no problem.

Cons: after triple-booting XP, Windows 7 RC, and eeebuntu, I'm not sure I can use my recovery partition. Also, it gets hot on my lap on AC power while recharging the battery. The power brick gets pretty warm when charging and the unit is also on--however, bonus points for the small form factor of the power brick. Finally, after it's been running for a while I can't turn the wifi back on (if I toggle it off with function-f2) without rebooting.

No problem upgrading the RAM, but I was running it for about a week or two before upgrading, and I'm not sure I see any real performance difference. So for anyone on the fence, you can probably save your money. (I know a lot of reviews say it's a pretty cheap upgrade, but let's be honest, it adds more than 8% to the cost at the time I bought it---that's hardly insignificant).

Not missing the CD/DVD drive. Most software I need I can download. Anyway, I'm going to buy an enclosure soon and turn an old internal DVD drive and hard drive into backup storage and DVD when I need them. However, I would get a 2GB+ USB drive and/or SD card (the 1000HA treats them the same for booting, if you need to) for moving data, loading an OS, etc.

Final note: I wish they had these when I was in college! I don't know how durable they are in a backpack, etc., and probably not as durable as the SSD-based netbooks, but the extra "legroom" on the hard drive is definitely worth it (over an SSD) in my book. But if I were a student or a parent, I would definitely be shopping for an EEEPC or other netbook.
